TAMPA, FL — A JetBlue flight from Cancun to Newark was forced to make an emergency landing at Tampa International Airport on Thursday afternoon after experiencing a sudden drop in altitude. At least 15 passengers were hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries, according to officials.
The incident occurred around 2 p.m. ET when JetBlue flight 1230 encountered what the airline described as a “flight control issue.” The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the aircraft was diverted to Tampa after the alarming altitude drop.
Witnesses reported a chaotic scene as the plane landed, with medical personnel waiting on the tarmac to assist the injured. Tampa Bay Fire Rescue spokesperson Vivian Shedd stated that approximately 15 to 20 individuals were evaluated and transported to local hospitals. While the nature of the injuries remains unclear, air traffic audio captured a radio call mentioning a possible head laceration among the passengers.
JetBlue has since grounded the Airbus A320 for inspection and announced a full investigation to determine the cause of the altitude drop. “The safety of our customers and crewmembers is always our first priority, and we will work to support those involved,” the airline stated.
This incident comes amid growing concerns in the U.S. aviation sector, exacerbated by an ongoing government shutdown that has affected air traffic controller staffing and led to widespread flight delays.
