ABC Action News viewers come together to support Healthy 22nd Street Community Garden in East Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. — The Healthy 22nd Street Community Garden in East Tampa is making a big impact on the community by encouraging people to grow their own food and take control of their health and finances. Recently, the garden was in need of soil and gardening tools to help expand their program, and ABC Action News viewers stepped in to help.

After starting an ABC Action News Gives Campaign, viewers generously donated $5,400 to the Community Garden. ABC Action News anchor Lauren St. Germain met with Regina Polite and other members of the garden to present them with the donation, which included 10 bags of soil and 10 gardening kits.

Regina expressed her gratitude, stating, “This is the support we need for our community to help us get started because this stuff cost a lot of money.” The group was overwhelmed by the generosity of the viewers and the community.

In addition to the soil and gardening tools, St. Germain presented the Healthy 22nd Street Community Garden with a nearly $5,000 check. Regina explained that this donation will help provide fresh vegetables to those in the community who may not be able to afford them otherwise.

The Healthy 22nd Street Community Garden currently has 30 active members and a waitlist of 10-15 people. Regina emphasized that the garden is open to everyone, regardless of income, and they are dedicated to teaching people how to grow their own food.

The Community Garden is part of the nonprofit Coalition of Community Gardens, which will be giving the full check directly to the Healthy 22nd Street Community Garden. If you are interested in getting involved with this organization, you can learn more on their website.

Thanks to the generosity of ABC Action News viewers, the Healthy 22nd Street Community Garden is able to continue their mission of empowering the community through gardening and healthy eating.
