47 Ways to Celebrate Juneteenth in the Tampa Bay Area

Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a significant holiday celebrated annually to commemorate June 19, 1865, and the ending of slavery in the United States. The holiday’s name combines the words “June” and “nineteenth.” This year, the Tampa Bay area is offering a plethora of events and activities to celebrate this important day.

One of the events to kick off the celebrations is the Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony, where Tampa Mayor Jane Castor and community members will raise the Juneteenth flag. The ceremony will feature entertainment, free food, and vendors. Another event, the Juneteenth Lunch and Learn, will provide educators and parents with strategies to lead their scholars to reading success.

For those interested in art and music, the Shades of Pride: Juneteenth festival is a two-day event showcasing the “Black and Brown experience” of the LGBTQ+ community. Activities include poetry slams, panel discussions, and live concerts. Additionally, the Juneteenth Cultural Celebration at the Tampa Museum of Art will offer art-making activities, live music, performances, family portraits, and food trucks.

Sports enthusiasts can participate in the Juneteenth Golf Classic, a scholarship benefit tournament organized by the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and the Culture for Service Foundation. There will also be a three-on-three basketball tournament at the Community Unity: Juneteenth event.

Other activities include film screenings, gospel festivals, paint and sip parties, and even a flash mob to celebrate freedom and unity. The Tampa Bay area has a wide range of events to honor and celebrate Juneteenth, offering something for everyone to enjoy and participate in.
