TAMPA, FL – A devastating incident unfolded early Saturday morning in Ybor City, leaving four people dead and at least 13 others injured after a reckless driver crashed into a popular local business. The Tampa Police Department reported that 22-year-old Silas Sampson has been arrested and faces multiple charges, including four counts of vehicular homicide.

The chaos began around 12:30 a.m. when officers observed two vehicles racing near Hanna Avenue and Nebraska Avenue. The pursuit escalated as one vehicle sped onto I-275 Southbound, prompting the police air unit to track its movements. Florida Highway Patrol troopers joined the chase, attempting a PIT maneuver at Nebraska Avenue and Palm Avenue. However, the vehicle continued down busy 7th Avenue, ultimately losing control and crashing into the patio area of Bradley’s On 7th, located in the 1500 block of East 7th Avenue.

Witnesses described the scene as horrific. “I just came here to have a nice cigar and relax a little bit with some friends,” said Howard Hopkins, who witnessed the crash. “Then here comes the car, jumps the curb, hits the corner of the building, and just runs right through people… it was pretty bad.”

Three pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene, while a fourth victim succumbed to injuries at a local hospital. The injured range from life-threatening to minor, with reports suggesting that some victims may have sought medical attention independently, potentially raising the total number of injured to 15 or 17.

Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw expressed his sorrow over the tragic event, stating, “This morning we had a tragic incident where at least four victims senselessly lost their lives and eleven others were injured as a result of a careless, reckless driver.”

Authorities have not found any evidence suggesting that Sampson’s actions were targeted at any specific individual or business. In addition to the vehicular homicide charges, he faces four counts of aggravated fleeing to elude with serious bodily injuries.

Tampa Mayor Jane Castor also addressed the tragedy, stating, “What happened in Ybor City last night was devastating. Families are grieving, first responders are hurting, and our entire city feels this loss. My thoughts are with everyone affected.”

As the investigation continues, police have closed off 7th Avenue between 15th and 18th Streets, working to gather evidence and ensure community safety. The city is grappling with the aftermath of this senseless act, as families mourn their loved ones and the community seeks answers.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the profound impact it can have on innocent lives.
