20 Ways to Celebrate Black History Month in the Tampa Bay Area
The Tampa Bay area is gearing up for a month-long celebration of Black History Month with a variety of events that highlight achievements, culture, and civil rights. From concerts to food festivals, there are plenty of ways to participate in the festivities.
One event to look out for is the play “School Girls: or The African Mean Girls Play” at the American Stage Theatre Company in St. Petersburg. The play is set in 1986 at an all-girls school in Ghana and follows the story of a new American student who challenges the reigning queen bee. The play runs from February 12 to 27, with tickets starting at $20.
For those interested in music, the musical “Crowns” at the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa is a must-see. The show features a strong female-driven cast and explores African American cultural journey through the lens of fabulous hats. Tickets start at $20.50 and the show runs from February 17 to March 6.
If you’re looking for a more educational experience, the USF Black Faculty and Staff Welcome Breakfast at the University of South Florida is a great opportunity to meet newly hired and promoted Black faculty and staff. The event takes place on February 18 and tickets are $16.
